Peeling and bubbling are usually the wall or the adhesive, not the paper. What to specify and what to check.

Wallpaper that copes with AC and humidity

Wallpaper in a warm, air-conditioned climate faces a daily swing between cool dry indoor air and warm humid air outdoors. Papers and adhesives that are not suited to it lift at the seams or bubble.

Start with the wall. A dusty, uneven or damp surface will fail whatever paper goes over it. Surfaces should be dry, sound and smooth, with cracks filled and loose paint removed, before anything is hung.

Choose a paper for the room. Washable, scrub-resistant vinyl suits hallways, kids' rooms and kitchens. Fabric-backed wallcoverings and non-woven papers suit living rooms and bedrooms, and a breathable backing helps in a humid climate.

The adhesive matters as much as the paper. Anti-mould, anti-bacterial adhesives suit this climate, and installers who use them should say so.

Pattern matching and seam alignment separate a good installation from a poor one. Laser-level alignment keeps large patterns straight across the whole wall, and seams should be almost invisible at normal viewing distance.

Custom murals are printed to the size of your wall, which takes longer than stocked catalogue papers, so plan the timing around that.
